Abstract

The work surveyed staff discipline in academic libraries in Delta State. It was guided by four objectives of the study. The study adopted the survey design and the population of the study is thirty (30) Heads of the library (the academic Librarian in charge and readers services head) in fifteen academic libraries under study. The questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection. Data generated from the study were analyzed using frequency count and simple percentage (%). Findings of the study revealed that; although disciplinary procedures are rarely carried out, the discipline procedures mainly demonstrated in the libraries studied are formal warning, reprimand/query, temporary suspension, Verbal Warnings and demotion. It was discovered that the reasons for indiscipline in the libraries with ethnicity/ nepotism ranks highest and the elements influencing the effective adoption of disciplinary procedures in libraries are lack library policy. Based on the findings of the study, the researchers recommend that the management should establish clear and well-communicated disciplinary policies, provide training to library staff on conflict resolution and enforcement procedures, foster a culture of respect and inclusion and collaborate closely with university administration and other stakeholders to ensure a consistent approach to disciplinary issues.
