Abstract

This thesis examines the technical direction processes for two studio productions, Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl and Tigers Be Still by Kim Rosenstock, produced during the 2025–2026 season at the Nebraska Repertory Theatre. Through comparative analysis, this document explores how differing design styles—metaphorical and installation-based versus grounded realism—impact the planning, communication, and execution responsibilities of a technical director within a constrained academic production environment. Both productions operated within similar parameters, including limited budgets, student-based labor, and a shared performance space, allowing for a focused evaluation of process rather than resources. The Eurydice production emphasized abstract scenic elements, including large-scale string installations and explorations of automated movement. This process required extensive research, iterative problem-solving, and adaptability in response to feasibility constraints. In contrast, Tigers Be Still utilized a more traditional, realistic box set, enabling a more structured and proactive approach to drafting, budgeting, and construction. Central to this thesis is the development of a technical direction methodology tailored to a student workforce. Strategies such as color-coded drafting, step-by-step build documentation, and intentional delegation were implemented to improve clarity, efficiency, and engagement among carpenters of varying experience levels. These approaches were evaluated across both productions, demonstrating increased effectiveness when applied earlier and more consistently in the process. Additionally, this thesis addresses the relationship between conceptual design and executional complexity, highlighting how visually simple elements may require significant labor and coordination. Through reflection on both productions, the author identifies key areas of growth, including improved feasibility analysis, labor management, and leadership practices. Ultimately, this work positions technical direction as a discipline that balances creative intent with logistical constraints, emphasizing the importance of adaptability, clear communication, and proactive planning in achieving successful production outcomes.
