Abstract
The objectives of this study were: (I) to determine a suitable chemical sterilant under laboratory conditions, which would effectively eliminated competition of the natural soil flora with Stachybotrys atra and thereby allow for its ready establishment in the soil. (II) To determine the nitrogen requirements, with reference to nitrogen level and source, which would promote optimum growth of S. atra and concurrently water stability of aggregates. With this information, it might be possible to establish and promote the growth of S. atra in the soil under laboratory conditions.
