Abstract

The research reported herein was conducted to determine if the feeding of antibiotics can prevent acidosis when cattle are started on a high concentrate ration. Animal performance and the content of acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, lactic acid, the total volatile fatty acids (TVFA), and protozoa in the rumen were all studied in cattle trails during the initial feeding period. In vitro lactic acid production and dry matter disappearance were also studied in relation to the concentration of terramycin (oxytetracycline), neomycin, or zinc bacitracin added to the ration.
