Abstract

The feeding of wheat, the problem of acidosis and the reduction in animal performance have become of increasing interest and concern to the feedlot industry. The research conducted herein was conducted to evaluate two aspects: first, the feeding characteristics of different varieties of wheat; and secondly, to determine if lactic acid production and accumulation in the rumen is associated with depression in daily feed intake of high wheat rations. In addition, chemical additions were evaluated in their ability to control lactic acid, rumen pH, and thus, increase animal performance.
