Abstract
d-Gulonic and d-idonic acids have been prepared by the hydrolysis of the cyanhydrine of xylose. Attempts to prepare an abnormal lactone of gulonic acid have failed indicating that the structure of gulonic acid is such that it forms only one lactone. The physical properties of the gummy idonic acid have been carefully studied in an attempt to crystallize its lactone but without success.
