Abstract

This is a study of the perceptions of inter-family relationships between homemakers with observable and unobservable physical disabilities. It was the purpose of this study to determine if:

  1. There was a difference in the self-report as analyzed by the 23 rubrics of personality included in the Gough Adjective Check List between homemakers with observable physical disabilities and homemakers with unobservable physical disabilities.

  2. There was a difference in self-perception between homemakers with observable physical disabilities and homemakers with unobservable physical disabilities.

  3. There was a difference between the attitudes of the husband toward the wife with an observable physical disability and the attitudes of the husband toward the wife with an unobservable physical disability.

  4. There was a difference in marital satisfaction in those marriages in which the wife has an observable physical disability and those marriages in which the wife has an unobservable physical disability.

  5. There is a difference between the attitudes of the youth toward the mother was an observable physical disability and the attitudes of the youth toward the mother with an unobservable physical disability.

The sample consisted of 43 homemakers and their families who were participants of a previous study conducted for descriptive purposes. The families all included a wife-mother with an observable or unobservable physical disability, husband-father who lived as home and one or more youth who live at home also. The first group consisted of 30 families in which the homemaker had an observable physical disability. The second group consisted of 13 families in which the homemaker had an unobservable physical disability.

Each individual of the families participating in the study completed a questionnaire or inventory. The disabled homemaker completed the Gough Adjective Check List for the purpose of obtaining the indications of their self-perception. The homemaker completed a self-report which pertained to her feelings about herself and her home. The homemaker completed a second questionnaire which concerned the perceived attitudes of the wife toward the husband in marital satisfaction. The youth also, completed a questionnaire which concerned the perceived attitudes of the youth toward the physically disabled mother.
