Abstract
Pedro Páramo’s popular language is semantically analyzed. The dialect of Jalisco, Mexico is pointed out through semantic opposition to peninsular Spanish dialect. Diatopic and diastratic views sustain the unity of the lexical system in Pedro Páramo that integrates, conforms language as a diasystem. The use by Rulfo of regional and deeply popular lexical units is a stylistic resource that details the rural ambience that reigns in Pedro Páramo. The use by Rulfo of the literary resource reveals the dialect’s topographic area and the social stratification linked to it.
