Abstract

It has been the purpose of this study to determine the effect of different rates and kinds of plant residue mulches on the denitrification process as measured by the numbers of denitrifying organisms. These numbers are compared with nitrate and moisture content of the soils on subtilled and plowed plots. Laboratory tests were made in pots containing 750 grams of Sharpsburg silty clay loam from the Agronomy Farm at Lincoln, Nebraska. Field samples were taken from plots on the Agronomy Farm and from a farm near Wisner, Nebraska.
