Abstract

It is the purpose of this thesis to study the flow of ground water to a well before and after the drawdowns are affected by the river recharge; that is (1) when the water that is pumped comes from the storage in the aquifer; and (2), when the water comes partly from storage and partly from the river.

To do this, it is first shown in Chapter II that the flow in the Platte Valley aquifer is Laminar. The following chapters, III and IV, respectively, are devoted to the discussion of ground water flow before and after the effect of the river recharge. Finally, in Chapter V, the fluctuations in the water level after the first day of pumping (see figure 1-2) are discussed and recommendations for further study are made.

In chapters III, IV and V equations describing the flow are derived. Solutions satisfying the given set of conditions are obtained and compared with the field data. Whenever possible, these solutions are generalized.
