Abstract
1. The 2- Benzal-1-indanone Series: the purpose of this problem was to study several derivatives of 2-benzal-1-indanone in the light of recently discovered chemistry of 2-benzal-1-tetralone derivatives and to ascertain whether similar reactions would take place resulting in the analogous compounds in the 5-membered ring system.
2. Elimination of Hydrogen Bromide from 2-Bromo-2 benzyl-4,4-dimethyl-1-tetralone: it was the purpose of this problem to extend the information of the elimination of hydrogen bromide from this compound using several reagents of varying nucleophilic strength in order to gain better insight into the mechanism of this elimination. It was desired to relate the results of this study to the corresponding reactions of 2-bromo-2-benzyl-1-indanone.
