Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the status of music appreciation courses in the public junior colleges in the United States. This resolved itself into: (1) investigating the history of music appreciation courses; (2) exploring the concept underlying such a course; (3) determining the number of public junior colleges offering music appreciation, the length of the course, the number of class periods a week, and the credit received; (4) ascertaining the content of the course, the equipment and materials used, and the procedures followed in teaching the course; (5) suggesting the elements in a desirable music appreciation course.
