Abstract
One of the most recent of American playwrights has risen in seventeen years to an outstanding position in the list of contemporary dramatists. With his first play in 1923, Maxwell Anderson began a career which has continued until 1940. The purpose of this thesis is to determine what Anderson has done in the American theatre and then to analyze and evaluate his works. His plays can be divided into two distinct categories: historical and sociological.
