Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine microbial activity by manometric respiration measurement of soil from continuously subtilled and plowed plots in a corn-oats-wheat rotation after 20 years. The influence of moisture and several inorganic and organic materials on respiration of the microorganisms in the soil was also investigated.

Soil respiration was measured with the Warburg manometric respirometer on soil samples from corn-oats-wheat rotation plots at Lincoln, Nebraska, which had been subtilled and plowed continuously for 20 years.
