Abstract

Summary

In the paper is given a survey of floristic and plant geographical investigations in the Mongolian People's Republic. First floristic investigations in Mongolia were made in the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century (MESSERSCHMIDT, BUNGE, MAXIMOVICZ). In the second half and the end of the 19th century the expeditions of the Russian Geographica l Society gave an important contribution to the investigation of the Mongolian flora (POTANIN, KOZLOV). Also other scientists and travellers collected material on extensive expeditions (KLEMENZ, PALIBIN, SAPOZNIKOV).

After the Mongolian revolution from 1921 botanical expeditions from soviet scientists were carried out already in the 20th. The Mongolian Commission of the Academy of Science of the Soviet Union was established 1925, and organized new expeditions (PAVLOV, IKONNIKOV-GALICKIJ). JUNATOV worked in Mongolia from 1940 more than 10 years. 1947 began the scientific work of the Mongolian Agricultural Expedition of the Academy of Science of the Soviet Union (LAVRENKO, JUNATOV, GRUBOV). GRUBOV 1955 compiled the first complete catalogue (conspect) of the flora of the Mongolian People's Republic. He completed it constantly, and at last he published the Key to the vascular plants of Mongolia with an atlas (GRUBOV 1982). Since the 60th mongolian authors published many remarks to the flora of their country (BANZRAGČ, DAVAZAMC, ÖLZIJCHUTAG, SANČIR).

1970 began the work of the Soviet-Mongolian Biological Expedition, organized by the academies of both countries. 1971 started the joint Soviet-Mongolian Chubsugul Expedition of the Irkutsk and Ulan-Bator universities. Both expeditions are still working every year. Botanists of the GDR, ČSSR and from Poland carry out botanical expeditions in Mongolia in collaboration with the Mongolian partners. Many species new to Mongolia or regions of Mongolia were found, and species new for science were described. All literature referring to this topic is quoted rather completely.
