The Effects of Certain Environmental Factors on Seed Production in Side-Oats Grama
Abstract
In regions characterized by long hot summers, a cropping system which includes grasses for hay or pasture can be sub- stantially improved by the use of adapted strains of warm- season grasses. Side-oats grama, Bouteloua curtipendula (Michx.) Torr., is one of the native grasses which would help fill this need in Nebraska if it were brought under more extensive cultivation. It is a deep-rooted, perennial mid- grass which is broadly adapted to variations of soil and climate. The species exhibits a wide range of ecotypes from Canada to Argentina. It is frequently found in mixtures with other native grasses where these have escaped the plow, and often occurs as the principal grass growing in bunches on the steep banks of ravines and on dry ridges. However, it has short rhizomes and tends to form a continuous sod under cultivation. It produces abundant palatable foliage and is an excellent forage grass.
