The Development of the Nebraska Common School Lands and Funds

FREEMAN BERNARD DECKER, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

At the close of the Revolutionary War, the United States came into pos- session of a vast area of land reaching from the Alleghenies to the Mississippi, known as the Northwest Territory. When Virginia was admitted to the Union, the state requested that the land in the Northwest Territory be set aside to be used to help support schools. The land was surveyed and platted into townships six miles square and containing thirty- six sections. Section sixteen in every township was reserved for the maintenance of public schools. Other states, as admitted into the Union, were given the same consideration. The same grant was made to the original thirteen states.
