STUDIES ON DIGENETIC TREMATODES FROM MARINE FISHES OF LA JOLLA, CALIFORNIA

WILLIAM ROARK MONTGOMERY, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

Trematodes of fishes attracted the attention of some of the earliest of helmintologists. The Mediterranean was the first region to be studied, particularly in Italy. Here, Rudolphi (1802, 1809, 1819); Monticelli (1893), and Stossich (1883, 1886, 1890, 1904) described many species. In those days, almost all digenetic trematodes were placed in the genus Distomum. In 1899, Looss published his classical work dividing the genus Distomum into many genera, including some from fishes. Looss later (1907) clarified the status of a number of fish trematodes notably in the family Hemi- uridae.
