INHERITANCE STUDIES IN BROADLEAF BIRDSFOOT TREFOIL, LOTUS CORNICULATUS L.
Abstract
Most of the investigational work with birdsfoot trefoil has been confined to studies other than genetic. This limitation has been due, in part, at least, to the fact that birdsfoot trefoil has not been as widely grown and has, therefore, not been considered as important as certain other forage legumes. Another contributing factor may have .oeen the anticipated difficulty of working with a largely self-sterile, tetraploid species. However, the increasing popularity of the crop in recent years and a clearer appreciation of its potentialities as a replacement for alfalfa, alsike or ladino clover under certain conditions seemed to warrant a more intensive study of the species particularly from a genetic standpoint.
