A Comparative Analysis and Performance Guide for Six Études Pour Hautbois Solo by Gilles Silvestrini and Collision Etudes by Alyssa Morris

Brandy Trucke, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

This document explores two of the most prominent works for oboe within an often-neglected area of the unaccompanied oboe repertoire, the concert etude. Six études pour hautbois solo by Gilles Silvestrini and Collision Etudes by Alyssa Morris demonstrate the vast possibilities of pedagogical goals being explored through highly entertaining and programmatic concert works. Morris used Silvestrini’s set of etudes as a model for her own composition. This document examines both works from a theoretical and performance perspective to discover the similarities and differences between the works. The analyses provided operate through a pitch centric perspective. Due to the lack of traditional harmonic context available during unaccompanied performance, this analytical perspective allows the performer the control and ability to influence the aural perception of the musical journey. Since the purpose of most etudes is to tackle a specific pedagogical issue, this document will also provide discussion of the oboe-specific topics explored within the etudes. The performance suggestions will also show how an analytical understanding can impact musical decisions. For many of the etudes, specific exercises, fingering charts, and practice methods are provided. Discussion of the artwork is woven into the dialogue concerning both the analyses and performance suggestions to highlight the composers’ programmatic writing styles. A deep understanding of the etudes and the surrounding inspirational context will greatly impact performance, as well as the recognition that both sets of etudes are valuable contributions to the oboe’s repertoire.
