Drum Notes: A Poetry Collection on Grief

Katie Marya, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

DRUM NOTES is a poetry manuscript that sets Sophocles’ Antigone in modern day Atlanta, Georgia. After her youngest brother dies of a fentanyl overdose, a sister attempts to secure a place for him in the afterlife. In the background of their childhood their father builds drum kits, and the lake by their home reveals water’s secrets. This collection traces how personal grief links us to geography, history, and the larger griefs of a nation.
