A performance edition of Trois pièces pour quatuor de trombones by Eugéne Bozza

Nancy Elizabeth Vogt, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

Eugène Bozza's Trois pièces pour quatuor de trombones is an important composition in the trombone quartet repertoire. The work has been performed many times by student and professional ensembles, and has been recorded several times. Unfortunately, the only available published edition has many errors and inconsistencies of notes, articulations and other musical markings. Because no autograph score is available, re-arrangements and recorded performances of the piece have been examined to determine correct markings. The overall purpose has been to follow the composer's intentions as accurately as possible and to make the piece more easily playable by trombonists. The first chapter of this document lists reasons for this project and comments from trombone performers and teachers. Chapter two includes a biography of Bozza and an annotated bibliography of his solo, etude and chamber works for trombone. Chapter three provides an overview of the original composition, and the following chapter addresses the re-arrangements for brass quartet and brass septet. Errors, inconsistencies and other problems are addressed in chapter five. The concluding chapter consists of the corrected edition, with brief comments and suggestions for performers.
