BENJAMIN F. RICHASON, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

In the 1950 Census of Drainage approximately 103 million acres of land were reported in drainage enterprises in the United States. Indiana ranked third with 11, 017, 709 acres in drainage enterprises; preceded only by Louisiana with over 12, 161, 000 acres and Minnesota with over 11, 269, 000 acres. The largest continuous area of land in drainage enterprises in the United States is located in the north central states, forming a great arc around the southern end of the Great Lakes. Indiana, located within this area, has a larger percentage of its total area in drainage enterprises, as well as the greatest mileage of drainage installations' in operating enterprises than any other state in the country.
