Manifestations of Aggression in Children as a Function of Parental Behavior

DONALD FREDERICK KAUSCH, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The problems involved in socialization of the child have attracted considerable theoretical and research interest. Repeated attempts have been made to determine whether relationships exist between parents' behavior and attitudes, and specific responses and personality traits manifested by their children. One type of behavior which has received special emphasis is that of the development and control of aggression. Despite an abundance of studies in this area, research has not solved the problem of how or why aggressive behavior develops. While the psychological literature suggests numerous broad and global types of antecedent conditions which may enter into this socialization process, there have been few reported attempts to study specified variables in a systematic fashion. It is the purpose of the present study to clarify further and refine relationships which may exist between rearing prac- tices and aggressive behavior.
