BIOLOGY OF THE SWEETCLOVER APHID, THERIOAPHIS RIEHMI (BOERNER), WITH EMPHASIS ON RESISTANCE IN SWEETCLOVER TO THIS INSECT.

GEORGE RUDOLPH MANGLITZ, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

Therioaphis riehmi (Börner) was first described in Europe and originally placed as the only known species in the newly proposed genusMyzocalHdium (Borner 1949). Dickson (1959a) stated that the group of closely related aphids introduced into this country (trifolii, riehmi, and maculata) may be considered to constitute the genus Therioaphis or may be raised to the sub-family Therioaphidinae as Borner (1949) did. Dickson appears to prefer the designation of the group as the genus Therioaphis. This is now commonly accepted along with the common name of "sweetclover aphid" for riehmi (Laffoon 1960).
