ENERGY AND ANGULAR DISTRIBUTION OF SECONDARY ELECTRONS PRODUCED BY 100 KEV PROTONS IN HYDROGEN AND 50-150 KEV PROTONS IN HELIUM.
Abstract
When charged particles traverse a gas they can lose energy by a number of different reactions. Since this process is of considerable theoretical interest it has been studied for many years. Recently developments in plasma physics and studies of the aurora have generated new interest in this field. Unfortunately, the theoretical methods which are available to describe this process are reliable only at high energies. Their application to processes in which the incident charged particle has a velocity as low as or lower than that of the orbital electrons is questionable. Therefore it is desirable to have experimental results in this energy region which can be used to test present and possible future theoretical treatments. Since hydrogen and helium are the simplest substances and since protons and electrons are the simplest charged particles, it is most desirable to work with these.
