SELECTED FACTORS RELATING TO OUTCOMES OF DEPARTMENTAL CURRICULUM PLANNINGDECISIONS

MAX POOLE, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

Those persons who are investigating curriculum development in institutions of higher learning will find that faculties have always been influential in decision making. An historical documentation will be made in Chapter II of this study, which demonstrates how changes have come about in college and university curricula during the past few years. The title of this study indicates that factors will be identified which relate to outcomes of departmental curriculum planning decisions. That revision involving faculties is a difficult, if not impossible task, can be fairly well sup- ported. Harris says:Although major changes or additions to the educational program must usually be approved by the college or governing board, the faculty in most institutions has prime responsibility for the curriculum. Yet few staffs seem to be effectively organized which may explain why the curriculum is often shaped more by internal pressures and external influences than by educational considerations.
