THE ULTRASTRUCTURE OF THE HUMAN ENDOMETRIAL GLANDS DURING THE SEXUAL CYCLE
Abstract
The histological changes in the endometrium in the normal sexual cycle were originally observed by Hitchmann and Adler (T 081 . They were correlated with changes in the ovary by Frankel (109) and Meyer (’20). With the investigations of other authors such as Schroeder (’15), Novak (’15), O ’Leary (’29) and Bartelmez (’33) the histological changes in the endometrium were divided into cyclic phases: The preovulatory or proliferative phase; and, the postovulatory or secretory phase. Rock and Bartlett (’37) studied the endometrium in an attempt to correlate the histological changes with each day of the cycle. Hertig (’4-6) continued to study and improve these criteria.
