Studies on the Thermophilic Bacteriophage-phi-mu4

FREDOUN SHAFIA, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

Several small bacteriophages have been investigated in the recent years (Mills, 1955; Zailer, 1958; Mayor and Hill, 1961). Reports have been made on the size and morphology of the single-stranded DNA bacteriophage ØX-174 (Hall, Maclean and Tessman, 1959; Tromans and Horne, 1961) and its properties (Sinsheimer, 1959a,b; Tessman, 1959; Sinsheimer et al., 1962). Interesting reports have been published on RNA bacteriophages f2 (Loeb and Zinder, 1961) and MS2 (Davis and Sinsheimer, 1963) and DNA bacteriophages ØR (Kay, 1962), S13 and ØX-174 (Tessman and Shleser, 1963). In contrast to the mesophilic bacteriophages mentioned, only a few reports may be found in the literature on the isolation and characterization of bacteriophages which attack thermophilic bacteria (Koser, 1926; White, Georgi, and Militzer, 1926). 1954 and 1955; Hirano, 1961; Onodera, 1961; Shafia and Thompson, 1962).
