Factorial Study of Changes in Ability Patterns of Students in College Algebra

ELIZABETH TAYLOR WOOLDRIDGE, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

This is a time when accomplishment in mathematios and science is receiving widespread attention, both nationally and internationally. Such attention is an added reason for teachers of college mathematics to be interested in the achievement of the students in first year courses as well as in their ultimate success or failure in the field of mathematics. Teachers recognize that students are not all equal in intellectual capacity, in mathematical aptitude, and in mathematical achievement. If this domain of individual differences among students is to be investigated scientifically, the basic assumption that individual differences among students can be interpreted in terms of a finite number of parameters or factors must be made.
