SOME HELMINTH PARASITES OF FISHES IN FRESH WATERS OF NICARAGUA

DONALD EUGENE WATSON, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

During the summer of 1963, I was afforded the opportunity to accompany Dr. Thomas B. Thorson to Guatemala and Nicaragua. The trip was made to obtain physical data on the Lake Micaragua shark and, to some extent, sawfish. Since the same shark was reported to occur in Guatemala, a stop was made there. Sharks were collected from Rio Dulce, Guatemala, and from several localities in Nicaragua. The Nicaraguan sites were: near Los Cocos at the northwest end of the lake, near San Carlos at the southeast end of the lake, at El Castillo along Rio San Juan which drains Lake Nicaragua and near San Juan del Norte (Greytown) at the mouth of the river on the Caribbean Sea. Helminths were collected at all these sites in order to obtain infor-mation to be compared later with helminths from the same shark species from both the Pacific and Caribbean. A collection of helminths was made from a single sawfish near San Carlos.
