'A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN': ITS NARRATIVE ART AND ITS ORIGINS

SHELLEY CLEBURN REECE, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

This study is prompted by my personal response both to A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and to the lack of writing about the complete work. I first read A Portrait of the Artist when I was an undergraduate, for, after all, the novel has adolescents and college students as its major audience. My reaction was like that of my fellow students== confusion. As a graduate student, I read it again and again reacted like many of my fellows, with anger toward J.he pompous young man I took to be Joyce himself. Some time later, after anger had given away to curiosity and before my own uncertainty had been resolved, I chose to teach A Portrait in a course and to try to articulate both the students* attitude and my own toward the novel. As I sampled the writings of professionals about Joyce and A Portrait.
