R(11) SYMMETRY AS AN ALTERNATE TO SU(6) SYMMETRY FOR ELEMENTARY PARTICLES

LARRY LEE SMALLEY, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The evidence for SU(6) symmetry in particle physics seems to lend support to its continued investigation. However, since the results of these investigations are not conclusive, the question arises whether some other group may not give equally good predictions. If one assumes that such an alternative group must contain [SU(3)/2,1 R(3), and not mix different trialities or statistics in the same irreducible representation, then the simplest possibility (the one with the fewest generators) turns out to be R(11). This group does require the existence of as yet unobserved spin-0 mesons and a second octet of 1/2 baryons2; but there is now evidence at least for the octet of baryons. Therefore, further investigation of R(11) seems warranted; we present here a determination of the weak-current and magnetic-moment predictions, and an investigation of mass formulas, coupling constants, and current commutation relations in R(11).
