The Circular Dichroism of Solutions of (Positive and Negative) Tris(Ethylenediamine)-cobalt(Iii)iodide
Abstract
The optical activity of the tris(ethylenediamine) cobalt(III) complex has been long known even though today there is still much speculation as to how to account for its circular dichroism (C.D.) spectrum. The structures of the chloride and bromide crystals of this cobalt complex have been determined from x-ray diffraction experiments, and therefore, (+) [Co(en) 3] +++ has been used as the reference complex ion in an attempt to establish a method for determining the absolute con- figuration of other octahedral complexes with three bidentate ligands. Efforts along this line have centered about an attempt to identify a characteristic C. D. transition for this type of complex and then to assign the absolute configuration as a result of the sign of the C. D. band.
