PREDICTION OF ACHIEVEMENT IN COLLEGE MATHEMATICS

Abstract

Although colleges and universities cater to the needs of a wide diversity of student interests and abilities, there can be no doubt that most students need some sort of training in mathematics. It is clear that the potential scientist or engineer must study mathematics throughout his full four years of college, for only then can he enter a graduate school, or an engineering school properly equipped to handle the technical courses which he must master. is not so clear but equally important that the student planning to major in other subjects in college realize that the mathematical requirements of most fields have risen sharply in recent years. The discovery of which students entering college have potential for mastering mathematical subjects, then, is an important step in channeling those with appropriate talents in the direction of the study of mathematics.
