THE SYNTAX OF CHILDREN'S WRITING

NELL CATHERINE ANDRE THOMPSON, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

How much research information is available about the complex intellectual process known as "writing"? The answer appears to be: "Very little." Past research seems to have explored only a small segment of the vast realm of language. In recent years linguists, psycho- linguists, psychologists, and language educators have designed new tools which may prove to be of considerable value to present and future researchers as they attempt to analyze language more precisely. Currently, through- out the nation, there seems to be an increased interest in language development and in language instruction in the elementary school. Oral language has received more research attention recently than has written language; however, this greater concentration is probably justified because oral language development appears to undergird the development of skills in listening, reading, and writing
