The Genera and Species of Feather Mites Related to the Genus Pterodectes (Proctophyllodidae: Proctophyllodinae)

CHONG KUN PARK, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The genus Pterodectes Robin and Mégnin, 1877 (Procto- phyllodidae: Proctophyllodinae) as previously defined (Trouessart, 1885, 1899; Gaud, 1952, 1953; Gaud and Mouchet, 1957) is one of the largest groups of feather mites, but includes a heterogenous assemblage of species. Numerous species groups are evident for the seventy-seven described species of Pterodectes (s.1.), but only the genus Anisodi scus (Gaud and Mouchet, 1957) has been recognized as a supra- specific taxon. Parallel situations have occurred for other genera, e.g., Megninia Berlese, 1883, Mesalges Trouessart and Neumann, 1888, Trouessartia Canestrini, 1899, but sub- sequent investigators have restricted the taxa and created new genera for the diverse species groups (Gaud and Atyeo, 1967 a, b; Orwig, 1968).
