THE EFFECTS OF PHOTOGRAPHIC MATERIAL PORTRAYING BLACK AMERICANS ON THE BEHAVIOR OF WHITE AMERICANS
Abstract
Problems relating to race, discrimination and prejudice in the United States have been well documented (Myrdal, 1944; Rose and Rose, 1949; Rose, 1951; Kerner Commission, 1968). The behavioral sciences have done much to define and characterize the effects of these problems (Williams, 1947; Allport, 1954; Pettigrew, 1964; Clark, 1965). Yet relatively few studies have been done that explore remedial methods applicable to this situation. It is the author's belief that little progress can be made towards a resolution of racial tensions without a drastic change in the behavior of White America. It is White America, with its numbers and economic and political power, that can make the greatest contribution to the eradication of one of America's foremost problems. Therefore, White Americans must be the focal point of research in behavior change related to racial strife in this country.
