PERSISTENCE VERSUS CHANGE IN LAND USE AND LANDSCAPE IN THE SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI VICINITY OF THE OZARKS

MILTON DALE RAFFERTY, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The Ozark region has been, because of its isolation and limited resources, a backwash area outside the main- stream of American cultural and economic life. Written accounts of the history of the region have been few, because of "the paucity of important events, the want of pride in local affairs, and the character of the people." Sauer's Geography of the Ozark Highland of Missouri provides insight into the economy and landscape of the Ozarks of fifty years ago.2 Great variations were noted in resource use, population densities, house types, farmstead characteristics, and other elements of the landscape that reflected differences in resources, attitudes, and cultural heritages.
