BYRON'S INFLUENCE IN SPANISH AMERICA, 1830-1852.

VICTOR SEGISMUNDO GRIFFITHS, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The study of Byron's influence in Spanish America, in particular that of its beginnings and early spread, is intricately associated with the evolution of the socio-political situation which developed in the hemisphere following the wars of Independence. The early nationalistic struggles to deter- mine the course these emerging nations should follow, created certain circumstances which opened the way for the introduction of romantic poetry and ideas, and predisposed the emerging intellectuals and political champions of the future to view with favor many of the salient characteristics of the hero of Missolonghi.
