FRANCIS WILLIAM MCINERNEY, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

On 25 November 1885, King Alfonso XII of Spain died after a reign of eleven years, a period of intense political strife between the Carlist and the Liberal factions. Alfonso 's widow, María Cristina, was immediately proclaimed regent. A few months after the King's death, María Cristina gave birth to a son, in April of 1886. The infant was immediately pro- claimed King Alfonso XIII, though his mother ruled in his name until 1902.
