Abstract
F inally, it should be noted that the in teractive e ffe c ts of maternal and peer d e p r iv a tio n probably i n t e r a c t in turn with environmental con ditions. For example, the contradictory r e s u l t s obtained by Beach (1968) and Folman & Drori ( 1 9 6 7 ) , a s ‘ in d ic a t e d in Table 1, may be due t o an i n t e r a c t i o n between the gen eral le v e l of environmental s tim u la tio n and the condit i o n s o f i s o l a t i o n . The rearin g c o n d itio n s for i s o l a t e d animals used by Gerall et a l. (1967), permitted minimal ext e r n a l stim u hti on, w hile n e i t h e r Beach nor Folman & Drori specify p recisely the laboratory conditions in which their animals were reared . The d i f f e r e n c e s in r e s u l t s obtain ed may have ocurred because busy or w e l l - t r a f f i c k e d c o lo n y rooms a ct upon developing animals d if f e r e n t ly than does s o c ia l is o la t io n that is combined with a general reduction in external sensory stimulation. It is also possible that other factors, such as the population d en sity'of s o c ia lly reared groups, result" in unexpected differences in adult se x u a l b eh a v io r .
