DIMENSIONS OF SELF-CONCEPT OF STUDENTS IN COUNSELING ORIENTED DROPOUT EDUCATION

ROBERT CARLTON SCHLEIGER, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

There has been an increased interest in academic proficiency of the American youth as shown by the number of research and experimental projects in this area. Investigations into relationships of many areas which affect achievement have increased during recent years in an attempt to make contributions to the overall learning process. One of the areas that has drawn considerable attention in recent years has been that of the school dropout. This present day concern for dropouts is not new. It has always been of major concern to many people because the dropout represents a waste in human resources. However, attention was not called to the problem as one of national concern until it was contained in two presidential messages. The problem was emphasized for the first time on a nation-wide basis when President John F. Kennedy focused attention in his 1963 State of the Union Message to Congress (U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Office of Education, 1964).
