Abstract

Sharks are a varied group, ranging from the largest fish in the sea, the whale shark (Rhincodon typus), which may reach 15 to 18 meters in length, down to Squaliolus laticaudus which is only ten to twelve centimeters in length when mature. Their habitats range from sea water through brackish water, to strictly fresh water. In all, fertilization is internal, but the mode of development may be oviparous, ovoviviparous or viviparous.
