THE LAST JUDGMENT IN MEDIEVAL ENGLISH MYSTERY PLAYS
Abstract
The Last Judgment in English Medieval Drama presents an interesting combination of a very ancient belief in judgment which had been expanding for centuries, and a drama which was, apparently, a creation of the people of the Late Middle Ages. A brief history A brief history of the subject of the plays in question can indicate something about the origin and development of thinking about the Last Judgmentuntil it is finally given dramatic expression in the Late Middle Ages. This history will show that, as far as the Last Judgment is concerned, the Middle Ages contained the essentials for the "dramatic moment": a people who wanted to respond to God; a concept of art that it should elicit such a response; and a concept of the Last Judgment which had a sense of personal urgency about it.
