ACCOUNTING, FINANCIAL, AND ECONOMIC IMPLICATIONS OF THE TAX REFORM ACT OF1969 FOR COMMERCIAL BANKS

TONY PEINADO, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

The unique role of commercial banks in our economy imposes grave responsibilities on governmental authorities with respect to the adoption of measures which may affect the operation of the banking system. Commercial banks not only act as safekeepers of the funds of the public, but they also satisfy the needs of the economy through the creation and allocation of credit. In their key role as collectors of savings, suppliers and generators of funds, commercial banks are an important link in the capital formation process. In addition, commercial banks provide the bulk of the nation's money supply.
