THE STRUCTURE, CONDUCT, AND PERFORMANCE OF THE RECORDING INDUSTRY IN THE UNITED STATES.

DANIEL WILLIAM COLLINS, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

This study of the recording industry has a two-fold purpose. Development of information within the framework of industrial organization theory may assist in an understanding of the recording industry. The work may also serve as a test of the validity of the theory itself. The investigation will establish the rather unusual characteristics of the recording industry. Some of these characteristics will be quite different from those of more conventional manufacturing industries. If the recording industry can be analyzed meaningfully within the frame- work of established industrial organization theory, and if the theory can be validated in this instance, then in some measure the support for the theory will be increased and its generality enhanced. The library of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and the library of the United States Department of Commerce at Kansas City were particularly helpful in locating source material. In addition, the writer wishes to acknowledge the substantial assistance given by Mr. Henry Brief, Executive Director, Recording Industry Association of America, New York, New York. Mr. William Hargraves of the Cavern Sound Corporation, Independence, Missouri was also very helpful.
