Abstract

The above considerations have implications for the process of mental health consultation. The consultant will ordinarily be very much concerned with the attitudes, impressions, and opinions the person or groups defined as the consultee(s) holds about individuals (defined as "clients" or "patients") who are receiving direct mental health services (e.g., evaluation, psychotherapy, etc.), and how these consultee-held attitudes and opinions translate into behavioral expressions toward the client(s). The research cited above would suggest, for example, to the extent the consultee perceives the client as "mentally ill", the more likely are stereotyped negative feelings and attitudes to be aroused.
