A Study of Achievement Levels of Nebraska High School Seniors on a Test Designed to Measure Mathematical Competencies

CARL FREDRICK CRAMER, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

One of the primary reasons for studying mathematics is to increase the ability of people to solve problems that occur in their daily lives. Mathematics is also studied as an occupational tool and as a subject that is interesting in its own right.^ One aspect of the use of mathematics in personal problem solving is as it relates to citizenship. Every society has some minimum level of mathematical competence that is desirable for effective and efficient citizenship. Thus it is instructive to consider the question, "How much mathematics is a 'must' for enlightened citizenship?"
