THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE METHOD OF PRESENTING COUNSELOR TRAINEES INFORMATION ON THEIR DEFICITS IN ATTENDING TO AFFECT AND SUBSEQUENT IMPROVEMENT IN ATTENDANCE TO AFFECT.

GARRY ALBERT POWELL, University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Abstract

Detection of counseling deficits in a counselor trainee is a major part of all counselor training programs. Once a deficit is detected it must be effectively communicated to the trainee. Effectively communicated means it must be presented in such a manner that the deficit behavior is eliminated and more appropriate and adequate behavior substituted. Regardless of the differences in technique stemming from the biases of specific training programs, it is necessary that each program develop a method to effectively communicate the kinds of deficits and substitute behaviors consistent with the therapeutic and/or theoretic bias of the program and the student's goals.
